Commands & Colors: Napoleonics

Recreate the battles of the Napoleonic Wars in a tactical wargame

Medium-highComplexity
CompetitiveDynamic

A two-player tactical wargame recreating battles of the Napoleonic Wars. Part of Richard Borg’s Commands & Colors system: a hex board in three sections, command cards and custom battle dice.

Compared with the ancients version, it adds more nuance and period-specific rules (combined arms, infantry squares against cavalry, artillery fire, morale). It is among the most highly rated titles in the system.

Classroom value

  • Reconstruction of real historical battles and exploration of counterfactuals.
  • The hand of command cards simulates friction and the fog of war (you cannot order the whole army at once).
  • Teaches 19th-century tactics (squares, charges, artillery support) as a combined-arms system.
  • Compared with the ancients version, it illustrates the evolution of warfare using the same engine.
